Asal Mula Listrik

Setiap benda terdiri dari bagian-bagian yang sangat kecil, yang disebut molekul. Apabila molekul ini dibagi lagi menjadi bagian yang lebih kecil, sehingga bagian-bagian kecil ini disebut atom. Tiap-tiap atom mempunyai satu inti yang disebut proton. Proton mempunyai listrik yang bermuatan positif (+), dan dalam keadaan tidak bergerak(diam). Proton ini dikelilingi oleh satu atau beberapa benda yang sangat kecil, dan benda ini disebut elektron. Elektron ini mengandung muatan listrik negatif (-) dan berputar mengelilingi proton dengan kecepatan kira-kira 300.000km/detik. (wow.. fantastis..!!) Elektron berputar secara berkelompok-kelompok dalam beberapa lapisan, sedang elektron-elektron yang tidak ikut serta dalam satu kelompok terpaksa berputar sendiri pada lapisan terluar dari proton. Elektron yang berada pada lapisan terluar ini disebut elektron bebas. Elektron bebas ini cenderung dan mudah sekali untuk berpindah keatom lain yang berada disekitarnya, dimana selanjutnya elektron ini turut berputar mengelilingi proton dari atom yang bersangkutan. Akibat dari perpindahan elektron bebas itu, meka terjadi kekosongan di dalam atom yang ditinggalkan dan diisi oleh elektron-elektron bebas yang berasal dari atom lain. Apabila pergerakan dari elektron bebas ini teratur kesatu arah (disebut aliran elektron), maka timbul aliran listrik (muatan listrik). Teori tersebut dapat dibuktikan dengan menggosokkan sepotong kaca pada sehelai kain sutera, maka akan terjadi listrik statis yang dapat menarik kertas kearahnya. Hal ini terjadi karena elektron-elektron bebas pada kaca meloncat/ berpindah ke kain sutera karena panas yang dihasilkan oleh gesekan, sehingga pada saat itu kaca bermuatan positif dan kain sutera bermuatan negatif. Untuk membangkitkan aliran listrik dapat dilakukan dengan beberapa cara:
- Dengan suatu proses kimia, contohnya pada battery/accu.
- Dengan adanya magnet, contohnya pada generator listrik.
Jadi arus listrik timbul karena adanya aliran elektron. Arus listrik diluar sumbernya mengalir dari kutub positif ke kutub negatif dan di dalam sumbernya dari kutub negatif ke kutub positif. Jadi aliran arus listrik adalah kebalikan dari arah aliran elektron.
